Hi,
as far as I can see, this is not currently possible, because the schema
for EFI disks does not include the 'backup' property (which is used for
other disks to exclude them from backup). You could open a feature
request for that, but I feel like we should try and see what the real
issue is:

What was the concrete error?
Was the VM shut down as part of the backup (I assume you mean 'stop'
mode backup) or was it already stopped?
Was it a backup to PBS or a VMA backup?
What kind of storage is the EFI disk on?
