In the days I did GPU passthrough I luckily always had a spare onboard USB controller in a separate IOMMU group which could be passed through, so I didn't need a add-on card.
I think you already know the GPU pt Guide from arch wiki? https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/PCI_passthrough_via_OVMF
The important thing is that the chip supports reset. So it can end in trial + error if you don't find a well known working device.

Thanks everyone for the useful info.
nb. I did try passing through my Motherboard USB as its not used by the
proxmox install, but that was a disaster. Shares IOMMU groups with the
disk controller...

None on mine (GTX 1070) unfortunately :)

Thanks!

Yeah, thats the trouble with the cheap and cheerfuls, getting solid info
on the chipsets is a minefield.

Thanks! I'll post here if I find anything.

That was a really interesting article - decided to get the "Startech 4
Port SuperSpeed PEXUSB3S44V" it uses the same chipset (Renesas/NEC -
µPD720202) as the card referenced in the article.
Thanks!

Card hasn't turned up yet but I did notice that one of the USB hubs had
its own IOMMU group, so passed that through (added the PCI id to
vfio.conf). Much to my surprise it worked.
Holy crap, the difference is amazing. USB Audio just works now, no
cracking or interrupts when starting any disk io or high CPU. The mouse
is much more responsive.
