* [PVE-User] 8.2-1 ISO doesn't boot via UEFI on usb

I downloaded this and wrote it to a usb stick. This is on a Supermicro
SYS-1028U-TNRTP+, e5-2699v4 system. I've setup to boot UEFI in the bios and
when selecting the usb stick with partition 2 for UEFI boot, I get the GRUB
LOADING output and then nothing else.

When I enabled the legacy bios and booted from the USB, it boots in legacy mode.

I have an old install of 7.4 that boots from UEFI USB just fine.

Has anyone else seen this?

Hi
Try Debian 12 first, and them PVE over Debian:

Sorry was going from memory here. It says:

READY TO BOOT...Welcome to GRUB!

Then after about 60 seconds this is printed:

error: no such device /.disk/info.

Hi,

I recently built some new Proxmox hosts, with Ryzen 7000 series CPUs. I
had issues with UEFI as well, one system was Asrock Rack B650D4U and the
other was Minisforum MS-A1. On both systems I had to disable Secureboot
as I just couldn't get it working. I even tried the process linked
before to no avail either. I would disable secureboot over using BIOS
boot. I also have had the issue with an older Intel based Lenovo M920Q
as well.

Would be nice if Proxmox could provide certificates that could be
imported to the firmware to fix the trust issue, as the certificates
linked in the post below from Microsoft are the only ones I could find,
don't work. Not sure how it worked for the original poster, but I've
tried it on different systems now with no luck.

Hi,

We've had similar issues in the past.
We had problems with the secureboot key which wasn't yet accepted in the "SMC Secure-boot key management platform" within the BIOS secureboot settings

You could try updating this database by simply going into each field & clicking update, or manually add the .efi keys for both grubx64 & bootx64 to this database.

Perhaps try mounting this ISO from an iKVM java or HTML5 session.

I let this sit about about 30 min while I had a shower this morning. I'm
unsure how long it took, but it did boot into the PVE installer finally.
Apparently it has something it's doing or waiting on it to time out on.

It does work, and as a bonus the NVME hotplug seems to work out of the box. I
need to test this further to confirm.

Tried this on a super micro 6028R-E1CR24L today. It doesn't time out or boot
after letting it set 30 min. This is on the latest bios and IPMI. As I
mounted the ISO via http (i tried a real USB too), i could see it stopped
accessing it shortly after booting.

This does appear to be some issue with the X10 servers and proxmox.

Hi Brian

I’ve been using both Ventoy <https://www.ventoy.net/en/index.html> and YUMI <https://pendrivelinux.com/yumi-multiboot-usb-creator/> to install PVE 8.2-1 from USB thumbdrives on Dell servers (UEFI by default).
Works very well for me.

My “PVE Install & Rescue” thumb drive contains several LiveCD ISO images alongside the PVE ISO:
* clonezilla to backup the boot drive(s)
* gparted
other useful tools for troubleshooting as well as the host's clonezilla image if needed.
Makes my life a lot easier.

Ventoy claims to support Secure Boot in UEFI Mode <https://www.ventoy.net/en/doc_secure.html>
Haven’t tried PVE installation with secure boot enabled though and would be interested to hear from someone who has.

I used ventoy to boot the proxmox-ve_8.2-2.iso (using the GRUB), it was able
to boot, detect UEFI and did an install with the UEFI loader. I rebooted the
the system locked hard right after"

10.691682] acpi device:17c: hash matches

I disabled md autodetect and it still hard locked at the ata2: line.

I tried to boot the following directly (it's using ipmi emulating the cdrom
from a http directory) and none would boot.
proxmox-ve_8.1-2.iso
proxmox-ve_8.2-1.iso
proxmox-ve_8.2-2.iso

proxmox-ve_7.4-1.iso did boot and let me run through an install, and booted.
I'm going to try an in-situ upgrade from it to 8.2.2.

Now I'm thinking there may be some issue with disk detection on this during
boot, as I ran into this on my other recent server build, it seemed the EFI
bootloader wanted to scan all the drives on the SAS HBA, but I disconnected it
and it went much faster at boot. This current server has 45 disks across a
couple expanders and I cannot disable them in the bios to try this theory.

As of now, this seems to be a bug relating to supermicro x10/x11 servers with
the 8.x distros.

Ok, I did a fresh install of 7.4-1, no updates or anything, added the 8.2.2
repo and did apt-get update && apt dist-upgrade. Rebooted and it came right
up. Note this is now on 8.2.4/faa83925c9641325 with Linux 6.8.12-1-pve
(2024-08-05T16:17Z), which is newer than the 8.2.2 iso.

I'm booting EFI and it's working now.

I did try the proxmox backup server 3.1 iso and that seemed to install fine,
so this is something unique to the 8.x ISO's and certainly looks to be a bug.

Workaround seems to be install 7.4-1 and upgrade to 8.2.x in place.

Try to install Debian first.
