Additionally, one thing I noticed is that while the grids get a 
horizontal scrollbar, the toolbar above does not (tested on Firefox).

Regarding the scrollbar issues: since I have my Firefox instance set to 
always display them, I don't run into the issue of the scrollbar 
overlaying the content.

To avoid that for all, what about the scrollbar-gutter property? sounds 
like this would help to avoid the issue without custom paddings and so 
forth.
