Applied series, fix-ed up the dashboard integration to cope with intermediate
changes from Dominik and squashed that into the commit, thanks!
btw. we really do some odd data/reference shuffling around, if a method gets a
reference it can use that to gather out the required data from the self
instance directly, no need to make the caller awkwardly do that. But you
probably copied that pattern over from existing code, it's pre-exsting after
all (and just to be sure: no, I do not mean that explicit method params never
make sense+)
