Subject: Installation problems with PVE ISO on ventoy
Date: Tue, 28 Apr 2026 13:17:53 +0200 [thread overview]

Hi,
I did an installation on a machine over the weekend and (re)found
something interesting: I store the pve installation ISO on a usb drive
with ventoy. (Ventoy enables a usb drive to host several ISOs and
present them when you boot).
The installation comes up, the installation looks good but upon the
reboot afterwards the machine hangs with "Kernel Panic! ... VFS: Unable
to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)"
I have had similar problems before with the 8.x ISOs where the
installation ISO (on ventoy) didn't even boot up. Back then I chose
debian and installed Proxmox afterwards.
After I wrote the ISO onto a usb drive by it's own (so no ventoy) the
installation went smoothly and the machine bootet up correctly after the
installation.
Both times I chose ZFS Raid1 for the two internal Samsung SSDs and
de-selected the usb drive that showed up in the ventoy case.
Cheers from Aachen - Germany
